nextbike have added a fleet of e-bikes alongside their regular hire bikes in Glasgow, with 63 available to use throughout the city and 21 charging stations.

The fleet of e-bikes were first unveiled in Glasgow's George Square last week, and have the standard 250 watt motors with top assisted speeds of 25km/h. Ran by nextbike, the e-bikes will join Glasgow's existing fleet of 650 conventional hire bikes and was funded thanks to a joint initiative from Glasgow City Council and the Transport Scotland e-bike Grant Fund, delivered by the Energy Saving Trust.

Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, said: "E-bikes are growing in popularity and having them available for hire in Glasgow is a fantastic option for getting about the city. Electrically-assisted bikes provide a boost to those who are building up their fitness, make longer trips by bike more manageable and open up cycling to people who may have not considered it before."
Current nextbike customers will be able to use their existing accounts to purchase e-bike trips, priced at £2 every 20 minutes ridden and capped at £30 for 24 hours. In order to filter for e-bikes you need to apply a bike filter. To find out which stations are electric, look at the station name in the app or website map. For more information, click here.
- REGISTER: Register via app, website or hotline or simply click here. By joining, you will also be able to rent bikes in every nextbike city worldwide
- RENT: Rent via app, hotline or customer card. Open the nextbike app and scan the QR code on the bike or enter the bike number. The lock will be released and your rental will begin.
- PARK: To park the bike temporarily, open the nextbike app and press 'Park'. Then press down the frame lock lever. A beep will confirm that the bike is locked. To continue the ride, press ‘Open Lock‘ on the app to reopen the frame lock. Note: Your rental is still running in park mode.
- RETURN: Push the e-bike into a dock at an official e-bike station. Lock it by pressing down the lever on the frame lock. A beep will confirm the successful return and end of your rental. If there are no charging docks available when arriving to an e-bike station, place the bike directly next to the station and then press down the frame lock lever. A beep will confirm the successful return and end of your rental. Note: If the charge on the e-bike is too low, you will not be able to use the electric assist.
Note: To correctly return an e-bike you must return it to an official e-bike station. Any attempt to return an e-bike outside of an official station will be subject to a £20 fine.
