Google Maps has received a micro-mobility update that means it can now highlight nearby e-bikes and e-scooters when users select the ‘cycling’ option for directions. The feature also seems to inform the user of each vehicle’s battery level.
Tech Crunch reports that e-bike and e-scooter share operator Bird last week joined Spin and Lime in being integrated into Google’s app.
Lime has been featured for a while, but Bird’s arrival comes only a week after Spin was added.
Users who choose the bike option when planning a route may now see these operators listed as options alongside ‘your bike’. No doubt others will follow.
If the user selects, Spin, Lime or Bird, Google Maps will then show nearby e-bikes and e-scooters.
When one is selected, the app displays estimates of the cost of the trip and also the remaining battery power in the vehicle, measured in kilometres.
Bird CEO and founder Travis VanderZanden said: “Through our integration with Google Maps, we are making it easier for individuals to embrace new modes of eco-friendly travel and to ultimately eliminate our collective reliance on congestion inducing, gas-powered cars – especially in urban settings across the globe where a majority of trips are under five miles.”
Ben Bear, CEO of Spin, said: “Our goal is to make it as low friction as possible for consumers to plan multi-modal journeys. It needs to be just as easy, and even more convenient to get around with bikes, buses, trains and scooters as it is with a personal car.”
This feature is not immediately available in the UK, but you can expect it to appear in time after being rolled out in the US and elsewhere in Europe.
