Honda Motors has announced that it will introduce a three-wheeled e-scooter later this year. The Striemo is a three-wheeled e-scooter that boasts a patented self-balancing mechanism.

Honda has actually established Striemo Inc as a separate start-up to develop the scooter. It is operating with a mission statement of, “Striemo will make your lifestyle more brilliant,” which possibly hasn’t translated that well.

The e-scooter itself might travel a bit better though. It’s a straightforward three-wheeler with a 25km/h top speed and so broadly in line with what you’d expect UK regs to be when they’re eventually introduced.

The balancing tech sounds handy too. Striemo says the system continually calculates the scooter’s centre of gravity, accurate to one-tenth of a millimetre.

There’s a video here, although presumably it’s the kind of thing that’s easier to feel than see.

Striemo co-founder and CEO, Yotaro Mori, says he developed Striemo based on a desire to help more people to experience the fun of a “spontaneous” means of transportation.

“My goal is to make Striemo one of the most commonly used mobility products in people's everyday lives around the world and create a better world where people enjoy the freedom of mobility.”

The Striemo’s set to be launched in Japan later this year and elsewhere early next year. They’ve been taking orders of the first 300 scooters for 260,000 yen, which is around £1,500, although it isn’t clear whether this will be the price long-term.

There are also plans to develop models equipped with mirrors and indicators.
