Here’s another prestigious motor company getting onto the e-bike bandwagon, with Maserati creating the now award-winning Trofeo e-road bike in partnership with Diavelo and Bafang.
It has been awarded with a German Design Award ‘winner’ for 2019, while also being nominated for the 2019 Italian A Design Award too.
The bike incorporates Bafang’s compact M800 mid motor for assistance, while Swiss brand Diavelo consulted on the frame design. With clients including Italian design house Pininfarina and road bike royalty Colnago, it’s small wonder that these are the people Maserati wanted to work with.
The frame is made of lightweight alloy assembled in a race geometry, incorporating an ultra-tidy integration of the mini 200w M800 motor and 200wh battery unit. In fact, you can hardly see it, while the system is claimed to weigh just shy of 4.4kg – and that includes the display unit and added shifter buttons.
The M800 motor is also designed to function efficiently during spikes in required power output, like steep climbs and sprints, and is designed to be unnoticeable when the legal limit of 25km/h has been exceeded, keeping the pedalling efficiency and overall behaviour of the bike as close to ordinary road race bike standards as possible.
The Trofeo is built using a top-spec Shimano Dura-Ace R9170 groupset, DT Swiss PRC 1400 Spline wheels, along with a pro-level finishing kit, and it’s set to become available in spring 2019 for €9,999 (approximately £8,999).
