West Midlands Police has crushed a number of electric scrambler motorbikes that were being ridden dangerously and without insurance. The force says it doesn’t sell such vehicles after confiscating them because it is illegal to ride them on public roads or in public spaces, “so if we sold them there’s every chance they could be ridden illegally or dangerously again.”
An e-scrambler needs to have the correct tyres, a speedometer, lights and a horn to be ridden on the road – most of which are not typical features of such bikes. (Needless to say, you need an MOT, insurance and all the rest as well.)
As e-scramblers are also illegal on public land, they can really only be ridden on private land with the land owner’s consent.
West Midlands Police said that two men had been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following a recent ‘ride out’ event in Birmingham and they remain under investigation while the investigation continues.
A spokesperson said: “We regularly hear of lout bikers tearing up parkland and causing trouble on the roads. We run operations with traffic and drone units to identify and catch offenders.”
Referring to the crushing of the bikes, they added: “These bikes can cost thousands of pounds. Don’t make a costly mistake by riding them illegally on the roads or in public open spaces.”
